It's Anton Mesmer's invention for hypnotizing people using magnetic fields. People held on to those rods for their "magnetism" to go under. Years later, it became obvious that all the equipment wasn't necessary

Is it a picture of Mesmers Bacquet filled with magnetic water?

Anonymous said...

That would be Anton Mesmer's "Magnetic Baquet". Mesmer is considered the "father of hypnosis", though he called it "animal magnetism" early on in his career. The idea behind it is that there is a magnet inside, immersed in water. The magnetism generated projects out through those metal (iron I believe?) rods that the women are holding. Since they are holding them, they are experiencing this magnetic force that is supposed to put them into trance. Some believe that it was much more Mesmer's charm and seductive abilities that induced trance -- notice they are all women? Of course they loved it, trance is a wonderful feeling.

Mesmer may have been off in several regards concerning hypnosis, but you gotta love him for starting the whole ball of twine. =)

I think it's a battery and they liked to hold the thingies coming out of it because they got a charge out of it (maybe it vibrated--if it were rhythmic, it'd be hypnotic, wouldn't it?).

This tank is, I believe, one of Mesmer's devices that he used in his healing processes. Mesmer would treat 30 patients in a vat filled with two or three layers of bottles of magnetized water at the bottom. The neck of each bottle pointed to the center and bent iron rods were inserted into perforations in the lid covering the entire container so that they could be applied to the affected body par. A rope was used for this also. Patients were placed face to face whenever possible, as close as possible to each other touching thighs, knees and feet as much as possible so that the magnetic fluid could continually circulate. Singing and harmonicas accompanied this. Often patients would cough, spit, feel heat or pain, or be rocked by convulsions lasting five hours (these were carried into adjoining room padded on all sides). Mesmer wore a lilac silk coat and carried a long iron wand with which he would touch the patient's bodies. He also magnetized then with his eyes, the laying on of his hands, or putting his fingers into a pyramid shape passing his hands, lightly all over patient's body beginning with the head. He would continue this until the patient was saturated with healing fluid and swooned from pain or pleasure. He was an early figure in the history of European hypnotism (at least in its application to human patients).

I don't know the name of this thing, but as far as I can tell, it looks like one of those (very) old magnetism devices that helped people partake in the sharing of magnetic energy. I'm no hypnotist, but if memory serves, magnetic passes (with hands) were used to put subjects into a trance, so this might have been used to induce group trances by sharing energy.

When Mesmer first set up his Salon in a large rented mansion in the Place Vendome, there was no lack of interest. His reputation had preceded him, and there were many wealthy patients to be seen at high fees, as well as those who would pay less. After several months, he moved to a house in the village of Ceteil, just a few miles from Paris, and it was here that the famous baquet made its first appearance.

Mesmer and his baquet filled with iron rodsThe baquet, a large round oak barrel about the height of a low table, enabled people to sit around it who then had access to the movable iron rods that pierced its cover. The lower ends of the rods located into the vessels of magnetised water, and each vessel itself immersed in water containing iron filings, glass filaments and some other material. Variations included cords to replace the rods, and sand to replace the water.

This contraption made it possible for Mesmer and his assistants to treat a number of patients together a form of group therapy. Patients sat around the baquet, holding hands to assist the circulation of the 'magnetic fluid', and bringing the affected parts into contact with the rods or cords. Anton Mesmer would move among them, resplendent in his lilac silk robe, sometimes talking quietly and from time to time making passes with his iron wand or hands. He would also 'fix the patient with his penetrating eyes'. There would usually be some appropriate piano music and, just occasionally, Mesmer himself would play his glass armonica.

I'm pretty sure that is a device used by Franz Mesmer called the baquet. When his popularity grew too large to treat all his potential clients individually, he introduced this device which had iron rods submerged in a liquid solution that was supposed to conduct "animal magnetism" to his patients. Very efficient, that Mesmer.

It is baquet used by "Dr" Franz Mesmer. It was used to restore the correct magnetic flow of a persons body. I read about this years ago when I read a book about the History of Hypnosis.

Best guess is that it is an early version of the vibrator. Most likely its an electical stimulation device to break about the female organism. You have to remember that hypnosis started as a treatment for "hysteria", which I guess was the old version of PMS. Later the early version of the Christian Scientists got a hold of the idea. Most likely it worked better than your Hypno Mojo.

I do blive this 'machine' was used to induce hynosis via 'magnetism'.

This, like the candle or the watch or simply 'listen to mey voice' or 'look into my eyes' works well IF the particpant is a good subject for hypnosis. If not, nothing will happen.

This gadget called a “Baquet” was created by the man who was considered to be the father of hypnotism, Austrian Franz Anton Mesmer, from whom the word “mesmerize” comes from.

This tub was made of oak, filled with magnetized water, iron filings and glass. The participants grasped iron rods while holding hands while being healed.

The truth about the gadget is that it wasn’t the thing that induced the healing but the flamboyant shows that Mesmer created while music was played while Mesmer spoke dramatically to the participants and guiding them into trance.

Mesmer never realized that it was his words, not the Baquet that influenced his patients to be cured.

I believe its an oak barrel called a baquet created by a man named Franz Mesmer. It had containers of "magnetized water" there were submerges in water with iron fillings and other materials. Several iron rods sticking through the top of it and into the containers inside.

People would sit round it holding a rod to the part of their boddy that was afflicted by something and holding hands to circulate the "magnetic fluid" though each other. The theory being that a disturbance in this fluid would cause illness. Mesmer would walk around in silk robes, speaking quietly and would make passes with his on iron rod to help heal the patients.

Hope that made sense!

Hi, um I hope I'm not spoiling this for anyone but I guess I'm supposed to answer here?

I found the tub here:
http://www.cabinetmagazine.org/issues/21/turner.php
and a few other places once I knew what it's called..

Anyway this was Franz Anton Mesmer's baquet he believed hypnosis had to do with (animal)magnetism, and if the body was out of balance with the energy of the rest of the cosmos a person would get sick. So the cure would be to rebalance that "magnetic fluid" in the body. The barrel was Mesmers' idea of group therapy and it had something in it like water or sand or glass bits and metal shavings (or some of all of that) and it had wires and metal rods comming out of it that people tied to whatever part of the body ailed them, then held hands with each other to complete the "electric circuit".. Mesmer saw himself as a conduit I guess and used his hands in front of people and he would walk around and talk to people do the eye fixation thing (mesmerizing) and have someone play nice music (or play the glass armonica he played himself).. I would imagine that in a time where sick people were pretty much guineepigs and women as a rule were bored silly this would be very nice and I guess it absolutely beats shock therapy or any of the other "medical treatments" at the time :)
Hope this is right lol english isn't my native language

Patients sat around the vats in communal groups holding a metal orglass rod, or a copper thread with the other end pushed into the vats - creating animal magneticism, curing physical ailments, psychomatic illness, & resulting in involuntary orgasmic responses "estatic catharsis", violent convulsions, cries and laughter.

Mesmer believed, and it is true even today, that our bodies are magnatized and an imbalance in this magnetic energy caused many illnesses. This could be "fixed" by rebalancing the magetic energy with the bacquet. He would hypnotize the patients into believing this would cure them and when the "procedure" was done the patients felt very much better. The faces of the ladies are an indication of being under hypnosis. Not to be outdone, many gentlemen also had this procedure done at the time.

The picture is of Franz Anton Mesmer's (1734-1815) "Baquet," a large oaken tub which was filled with bottles containing, what was publicized as, magnetized water. The iron rods which projected from the top of the baquet supposedly gave off "magnetic rays" which would, in effect, influence (induce trance) in people. This was what Mesmer called Animal Magnetism. Though sounding very strange today, Mesmer's theory was the first step towards discovering the true power that lies in suggestion and the effect that suggestion can have on people.

The experience was sometimes enhanced with the use of Franklin's musical device a glass armonica.
Use of the baquet sometimes caused a 'crisis' and the participant would be carried off to a crisis room.
The whole thing sounds like it would be a lot of fun !

Mesmer, who invented 'animal magnetism' used a 'baquet' (french for bucket) in his later experiments.

Mesmer's Bacquet - His theroy was very interesting basing healing with laws of planetary cosmos stating that that sickness was caused by the obstruction of the free flow of radiant fluid in the body and that he could restore a natural equilibrium in his patients with the powers of his own animal magnetism. To transfer this healing current, Mesmer would sit with patients' legs squeezed between his knees, press their thumbs in his hands, stare intensely into their eyes, and stroke their limbs to manipulate their internal ether. Looking closely at this process it appeared to be nothing more then his conceived method to mass hypnotize his subjects. Today, we can use similar methods without the use of a device. Mass hypnosis can be achieved through methods of confusion and making the use of creating an image in the minds of subjects leading to hypnosis. I find his device interesting but crude. It's Franz Mesmer's tub. In Paris, Dr. Mesmer set up a lavish establishment where his patients sat holding hands around this wooden tub of liquid, iron filings, and glass powder from which projected jointed metal rods to touch the ailing parts of their bodies. In the background, from behind curtains covered with astrological symbols, a glass harmonica played sweet, heavenly tones that soothed the patients. Then Messmer, in a long purple robe, would enter and touch the afflicted with a white wand, enhancing the magnetic potency of the "universal fluid" and sending them into a trance from which they awakened cured. The healing seance went on for hours, amid a growing tension accompanied by shouts, tears, hysterical laughter, and convulsions.

It's most certainly is the creation of Franz Anton Mesmer.

Mesmer treated very rich and very poor people. For the less well-off he ‘magnetised’ a tree from which hung ribbons or cords for his followers to hold and receive his magnetic therapy.

Another method he used was to fill a large tub with water, containing bottles of iron filings. Protruding out of the tub were iron rods which the common-folk held onto. Many of the patients had violent seizures or fell into deep sleeps which could cure many different kinds of ailments.
